Iron A South Kitsap man was arrested Thursday for burning a teenage girl's leg with a hair iron in January, according to the
Port Orchard Police Department. Prosecutors filed third-degree assault charges against Matthew C. McCoy, 36, on Monday. He's
being held in the Kitsap County jail on $15,000 bail. Officials at a South Kitsap school learned of the alleged burning in
March and informed law enforcement. The girl told police she'd left her hair iron on in the lower level of a house with the
intention of turning it off on a night in early January before she went to a movie. But when an apparently intoxicated McCoy
found it on, he got angry and chased her upstairs in the house. When she fell climbing up the stairs, she felt the "hot hair
iron clamp onto the back of her left leg," which burned her skin, reports said. More than two months later when police
examined her leg, officers said there was a "red abrasion" that was "consistent with the placement of an item that is hot"
and that had "equal spacing of a hair iron clamp." Officers interviewed McCoy, who said "he may have gone a little too far,"
reports said. He'll be arraigned Friday in Kitsap County Superior Court. He is also charged with violating a court protection
order.
